What Is Yaji?
Yaji spice is a traditional Nigerian seasoning best known as the spice blend used for Suya. It is a dry blend made primarily from ground peanuts, peppers, and warm spices.
Yaji is Suya Spice, Yaji is Suya Pepper. Yaji is designed to be applied directly to meat before grilling. Unlike marinades, it contains no liquid, allowing it to cling to meat and toast as it cooks.
The flavor profile of Yaji is:
- Nutty
- Savory
- Gently spicy
- Aromatic
Yaji spice is most commonly used on beef and chicken but can also be used on vegetables or roasted foods.
Outside Nigeria, Yaji is often referred to as Suya spice. While variations exist, authentic blends focus on balance rather than extreme heat.
